.ru is the country code top level domain [ccTLD] extension for Russia. .ru domain names became available for registration in 1994. The central registry for the .ru domain name is named the Coordination Center for TLD .RU.
Starting in 2005 the previous central registry stopped registering new .ru domain names but continues to register second-level domain names including .com.ru, .net.ru, .org.ru and pp.ru domain name registrations.
There is also a large number of second-level domain names that can be registered that are associated with specific geographic areas within Russia.
